Chamomile Hydrosol - Gentle nourishment

You have likely heard of chamomile being used as a tea and are aware of the many health benefits this has but have you ever heard of a hydrosol?

A hydrosol contains all of the compounds within the plant when it was harvested.

In the case of Chamomile the Hydrosol is steam distilled using the flowers. Yip I said distilled, hydrosol is made using the same process we use to make Essential Oils, the difference comes with how thy are separated as they come out the end.

Because oil floats on water the essential oil will sit on the top of the condensate water that is left over after extraction and is syphoned off through a tap at that point. The condensate water that sits at the bottom and is what we call our hydrosol.

Chamomile is one of the most ancient medicinal herbs known to mankind and its hydrosol is gentle and soothing and often used to refresh and calm the skin.

It is particularly helpful with dry and sensitive conditions.

So what can it actually do for our skin?

Soothes irritated skin

Chamomile has been used for centuries as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, mild astringent and healing medicine. Chamomile is widely used to treat inflammations of the skin and mucous membranes, and for various bacterial infections of the skin, oral cavity and gums, and respiratory tract.

Calm allergies and itching

Topical applications of chamomile have been shown to be moderately effective in the treatment of atopic eczema. It was found to be about 60% as effective as 0.25% hydrocortisone cream.

A study has demonstrated that chamomile flavonoids and essential oils penetrate below the skin surface into the deeper skin layers. This is important for their anti-inflammatory agents to do their job.

Chamomile Hydrosol is one of the main ingredients in our Toner.

I chose to present this product with a mister top so that there are options for how you choose to apply it.

You can spray directly onto your face and massage in alternatively you can spray it onto a cotton pad and wipe over your face repeating the process until the pad comes up clean.

I have just sown some Chamomile seed out at Benson Lodge and hope to have our own farm grown fresh Chamomile Hydrosol to use in our products next year.

It is a goal of mine not just to make natural products but to be able to grow the ingredients I use here (Climate permitting) this will mean I would never be out of stock of anything again and will be able to supply fresher ingredients than the skincare sold traditionally.
