Decyl Glucoside

What is it?

As I had such great feedback last week on my blog about SCI I thought while we were on the topic I would bring up the other Surfactant I use.

Decyl Glucoside, when used along with another surfactant will enhance the properties of the other surfactant being used.

Like SCI it is a very mild and natural derived ingredient which increases the spreading and wetting properties of the product.

Where does it come from?

Decyl Glucoside is another naturally derived ingredient.

It is produced by the reaction of glucose from corn starch with the fatty alcohol decanol, which is derived from coconut.

This is another ingredient that is biodegradable meaning it is Septic tank friendly.

It was an ingredient originally used in soaps and body cleansers because of its amazing foaming ability and mildness which cleans the skin without stripping the skin of moisture, this in turn also helps reduce skin inflammation and itchiness.

Is it safe?

Lets be honest here, just because something is natural doesn't mean that it is safe.

So I am always sure to do my research on all the ingredients I use to ensure that they are.

This study assessed the safety of 19 different glucoside products including Decyl Glucoside and concluded that it is safe and non irritating, non toxic, non-carcinogenic and has no known adverse effects on the human body.

It is actually ideal for people who have sensitive skin including babies and pets or just anyone who is concerned about the health effects of other surfactants because to get a product to behave a certain way surfactants are needed, its just knowing which ones to use, which brings me to my next lot of advice.....when you are buying lathering or foaming products the ingredients listed below are the ones you want to watch out for because they irritate sensitive skin, strip hair of natural oils, disrupt natural sebum production (which controls how oily our skin is), are known human carcinogens and can affect the hormones in your body to the point it can have adverse affects on menstruation, pregnancy and increase susceptibility to breast cancer. :

  • Sulphates

  • Formaldehyde

  • Parabens

  • Hexachlorophene

  • Phthalates

You may think that it is very unlikely that here in clean green New Zealand, ingredients like these would not be in anything you use? I encourage you to read the ingredients in the products you are using. The laws around what ingredients can be used in skin care here are very loose but they are required by law to write on the back of a product the ingredients that are used in order of highest quantity to lowest. There is also no regulation on the industry which has lead to all of the above ingredients being sold in products throughout NZ and it is up to you to be aware of not only what you are putting on your skin but back into our environment, into your septic tanks and into our waterways and ground!

Why do I use it?

The answer to this is really quite simple.

I choose to use Decyl Glucoside because:

  1. It is environmentally friendly

  2. It is gentle on sensitive skin

  3. It enhances the effects of the SCI

What do I use it in?

Dry Hair Shampoo Bar - Hemp & Rosemary

Oily Hair Shampoo Bar - Shea & Lemon
