Rosemary Essential Oil - The remedy for your scalp and hair

Rosmarinus officinalis plant

What is Rosemary Essential Oil?

Rosemary is both a medicinal and culinary herb.

It is a woody perennial and its properties have been known and studied for centuries!

The essential oil is extracted from the Rosemary plant using a method known as steam distillation. If you want to know more about how steam distillation works you can watch this awesome video to show you how it is done.

To summarise though, plant material is packed into a still column and water is heated in a chamber beneath this which turns to steam, rises up through the plant material absorbing all the oils along the way and then goes through a condensing column where the steam is cooled and turned into condensation which then drips into a container.

What is left is a hydrosol at the bottom and the essential oil sits on the top. They are then separated.

What are its benefits?

1. Stimulates Hair Growth

There was once a study done on men with Androgenetic Alopecia where some in the

group massaged diluted Rosemary Oil into their scalp daily for 6 months and the rest used Rogaine (A common hair regrowth remedy) What they found was that both groups experienced the same increase in hair thickness as each other which makes Rosemary a proven natural remedy and those that used it found less scalp itching than Rogaine.

There has also been research done to show that Rosemary oil

fights patch hair loss or Alopecia Areata.

2. Helps Heal Infection

A study published in 2017 found that Rosemary Oil may kill some fungus and bacteria, this would be beneficial if you have a skin infection or irritation of your scalp

3. May Ease Stress

Rosemary oil may help reduce anxiety.

When 22 young adults sniffed rosemary oil for 5 minutes, their saliva had 23% lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol compared to those who smelled a non-aromatic compound according to this study.

Who shouldn't use it?

Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use rosemary oil unless a doctor advises them otherwise. People should also avoid getting rosemary oil in their eyes or mouths, and should keep it out of reach of children.

What do I use it in?

I use Rosemary Essential Oil in my dry hair Shampoo and Conditioner Bars because generally the people who suffer hair loss have scalp issues that benefit from this ingredient which lead to dry hair.
